Excerpt from Hedake
When I thought about it, I understood that being angry with someone who had the same goals I did wasn’t right. Both of us sought a swift and effortless profit. As I reflected on my life, I realized I had weathered numerous challenges and traversed through immense darkness. With the dawn of newfound clarity, it would be hypocritical of me to cast blame upon someone else. Ultimately, I chose to accept Joe Gagliano’s proposition and arranged to meet with him in person. On my way there, many thoughts traveled through my mind. I eventually grasped the concept of accountability. Admittedly, I knew that accepting the initial offer to point shave was morally questionable. This decision would culminate in the most notorious scandal in college sports‘ history. However, who could resist the temptation of earning money while still triumphing in a beloved game? In my circle, I knew of no such individual.
As difficult as it is to admit, I was once profoundly ignorant. During that time, I was not even aware of the meaning of “point shaving.” This term was unfamiliar to someone hailing from my background. My mother earned roughly $30,000 per year, working for Southwestern Bell. In comparison, I could make $20,000 in 40 minutes.
